WRITING RESOURCE: How Do I Decide? Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing by Rachelle Gardner

I mentioned in my 2013 year end review post that last year I queried for the first time (I'm still planning on writing a post about my querying experience, but haven't done so yet) with no success. I also mentioned that self-publishing was something I might consider in the future, but wasn't where I wanted to focus my time and energy right now.

That being said, self-publishing is something I think about from time and time and would like to gain a better understanding of, because how can you be sure something's not for you if you don't know how it works?

I'd bought Rachelle Gardner's e-book about a year ago when it was first released, but hadn't gotten around to reading it. I thought now would be a good time to do so.

Gardner gives a great overview of both traditional publishing and self-publishing, as well as the pros and cons of each. What I found most helpful about this short guide were the checklist and a table that Gardner included.

The table appears earlier in the guide, under a section titled "Your Choices at a Glance." The table included several different categories, such as motivation, audience, time, etc. and gave a short statement under both traditional and self-publishing explaining why you would choose that option. For example, under motivation, Gardner states traditional publishing might be for you if "You enjoy being in a partnership and not having to self-motivate every step of the way," while you might choose self-publishing if "You're entrepreneurial and a self-starter."

The checklist appears later in the guide, providing statements for you to check that indicate if you're more suited for traditional or self-publishing.

I found these tools helpful as they made me think about aspects of each type of publishing that I might not have on my own. It also gave me a pretty clear understanding of which route is better for me, at least right now.

I would recommend this guide to those who aren't sure if self-publishing is for them, and would like to know how it differs from traditional publishing.

What resources have you found dealing with the differences between self-publishing and traditional publishing?
